Basis Bay, a leading Malaysian Data Centre and IT solutions provider, and Universiti Malaya, a renowned public research University, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to launch the Basis Bay Data Centre Foundation Certificate (BBDCFC). This marks a significant milestone in Basis Bay's vision to address the growing demand for skilled professionals in the data centre industry.
The BBDCFC, the first of its kind in Malaysia, is a cornerstone program within Basis Bay’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) that provides comprehensive training on data centre management, operations, Infrastructure design, security, sustainability and renewable energy. Developed in collaboration with industry experts, the curriculum will offer a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical application, including case studies, simulations, and potential visits to state-of-the-art data centres.
“We are excited to embark on this innovative partnership with Basis Bay. The BBDCFC will not only provide participants with valuable industry exposure but also contribute to the development of a highly skilled and competitive Malaysian workforce,” said Professor Ir Dr Kaharudin Dimyati, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research & Innovation) of Universiti Malaya. “This collaboration is not only between industries but also through the involvement of the Higher Institution Centre of Excellence (HICoE) UM Power Energy Dedicated Advanced Centre (UMPEDAC) from Universiti Malaya. HICoE UMPEDAC's expertise and knowledge will create a more comprehensive curriculum for the value creation of talent skills in data centre areas.”
Basis Bay's Centre of Excellence aims to be Malaysia's first dedicated data centre training centre provider, offering a comprehensive range of programs and workshops to bridge the skills gap in the sector. The centre will focus on experiential and observational training, preparing individuals for industry-recognized data centre IT certifications. Training modules will be designed by subject matter experts, incorporating real-time learning experiences through a mix of in-person and virtual, interactive, and experiential methods.
“This partnership with Universiti Malaya represents a pivotal moment for Malaysia’s data centre sector especially in nurturing a skilled workforce of data centre professionals,” said Dato’ Praba Thiagarajah, Group Executive Chairman of Basis Bay. “As the inaugural course within our valuable Center of Excellence platform, this program empowers individuals with the knowledge and skills to excel in Malaysia's thriving digital economy.”
Recognizing the importance of inclusivity, Basis Bay will offer scholarships to SKM (Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia), graduates and school dropouts who are passionate about pursuing a career in the data centre industry.
This collaboration with Universiti Malaya serves as the foundation for Basis Bay's ambitious global expansion of the Centre of Excellence. The company aims to replicate this successful model in multiple regions, cultivating a globally interconnected network of skilled professionals and driving the advancement of the data canter industry worldwide.
