Malaysia’s data centre industry is booming, with billions flowing into the country to meet the rising demand for cloud services and AI computing. As this growth accelerates, Basis Bay, a Malaysian-owned global IT services provider, is leading the way with a new approach that prioritises resilience, sustainability and data sovereignty.

Its latest project, a Tier-4 infrastructure eco-premium data centre in Cyberjaya, is set to launch next month, positioning itself as a model for the region.

Uptime is everything

In the world of data centres, every second of downtime costs millions. That’s why Basis Bay’s new facility is engineered with no single point of failure, adhering to stringent Tier-4 standards where every system has a complete back-up.

For mission-critical sectors such as banking, insurance, and government, this level of redundancy isn't just something nice to have. It's a critical necessity.

According to Basis Bay’s Data Centre Projects Lead, Ts Dinesh Manoharan, uninterrupted service is a fundamental requirement for their clients. Speaking to Digital News Asia CEO, Karamjit Singh, at the Malaysia Digital Xceleration (MDX) Summit 2025, he opined that for Basis Bay, achieving maximum uptime is not a key performance indicator to aim for, but the baseline standard of their operations.

The company has a nearly three-decade track record to back this claim. Since 1996, it has never lost a client due to a service-level breach (SLA) - proof of the reliability it now brings into its next-generation builds.

Designed for sustainability

While many in the industry are just beginning to focus on green initiatives, Basis Bay has been at the forefront for over a decade. In 2009, the company built Asia’s first purpose-built green data centre.

The new Cyberjaya site expands on this legacy with what Dinesh (above, right) calls an “Eco-Premium” approach, where sustainability is woven into the design from the very beginning.

The project brought together 17 consultants, both local and international, to advise on everything from energy efficiency to environmental protection. Highlights of the design include:

  • A unique bathtub rooftop that channels rain water to improve cooling efficiency.

  • A BioSwell pond to support local ecosystems.

  • Relocating trees and flora during construction to preserve local biodiversity.

  • Sourcing eco-friendly building materials from local suppliers.

“It’s about designing with the environment in mind, not just the data,” he explained. “In today’s world, both matter equally.”

A full-service approach

For many providers, a data centre is just a space with racks, power and cooling. Basis Bay sets itself apart by adding a deeper layer of service.

One key offering is Smart Hands, a 24/7 on-site support team that acts as a seamless extension of a client’s own IT staff. This service allows issues to be resolved immediately without waiting for off-site personnel to arrive.

The company also focuses on lifecycle management, performing preventive checks to extend the lifespan of servers and other equipment. “Think of it like routine doctor visits,” Dinesh said.

“Proper maintenance helps systems last well beyond their manufacturer-recommended end-of-life.”

A scalable, sovereign solution

As digital transformation accelerates, scalability is crucial. Basis Bay’s facilities are designed to grow with clients, adding capacity without sacrificing resilience or compliance. What makes the company unique is its end-to-end ownership model: it designs, builds, operates and manages its centres entirely in-house. This gives clients tighter quality control and a single point of accountability.

In a region increasingly dominated by global players, Basis Bay offers a sovereign alternative. By keeping its data centres Malaysian-owned and operated, the company provides governments and enterprises with the assurance that their sensitive data remains within national borders.

“Every organisation should be asking: where is my data really stored?” Dinesh emphasised.

“The answer matters more than ever.”

This strategy supports Malaysia's ambition to become a regional data hub while strengthening its digital sovereignty. The Cyberjaya launch demonstrates that local providers can not only meet but also exceed global standards.

The new facility is more than just another data centre; it's a blueprint for the nation's digital future. It points to how the country can build digital infrastructure that holds strong, runs cleaner, and keeps its data close to home.
